Madhab Singh Jamadar at the head of two companies of Ramgarh Infantry revolted and escaped to Ranchi to join hands with the Jaimangal Pandey, who had earlier revolted at Doranda.
With Ranchi and Doranda under their control, they declared Thakur Biswa Nath Sahi of Burkagarh and Pandey Ganpat Rai of Bhonro, the two influential zamindars as the chiefs of local groups of the freedom-fighters. They started holding regular courts in the bungalow of Captain Nationat Doranda and started passing official orders.
The detachment of Ramgarh Battalion at Purulia also revolted on the 5th Doranda rebels were joined by Bhola Singh, a zamindar Kora and Chandwa to Chatra. As a matter of fact they wanted to proceed through Palamau to form a join hands with the Kuar Singh’s forces at Rohtasgarh. There is little doubt that all who had revolted under the common leadership of Babu Kuwarn Singh, Jadunath Sahi, son of Kapilnath Sahi, a zamindar of Sulgee joined this popular revolt. The people in Ranchi area regarded him as an agent of Kuwarn Singh as he had married a daughter of his brother Dayal Singh.
Dalton, the commissioner, Mr. Oakes, the Judicial Commissioner etc., had to run away from Ranchi because of the popular uprising. They marched to Hazaribagh via Pithoria route. With the help of Raja of Ramgarh and Parganiat Jagatdeo Singh, they reached Hazaribagh but they proceeded to Bagodar (or Grand Trunk Road) where Rattarry’s Sikhs under Lt. Earle commanding Bengal Police Detachment joined them. With this reinforcement Dalton returned back to Hazaribagh and reoccupied this post albeit only for short period.
Rebellion in 1857
Martial-law was proclaimed throughout Chotanagpur Division. Shortly afterwards Dalton with reinforcements returned to Ranchi from where the insurgents had already left for Chatra.
Jamadar Madhav Singh evaded capture all through although the Government had a reward for his head. Jaimangal Pandey, Nandir Ali Khan, Subadars of the Ramgarh Battalion and two local leaders of the movement were captured and brought before Major Simpson on3rd October 1857; they were tried and sentenced to death.
Pandey Ganpat Rai Thakur Bishwanath Sahi also were captured at Lakraj in Lohardaga by Major Nation, Commandant of the 9th Bengal Police Battalion in March 1858 and were hanged at Ranchi on the trees to the north of the Commissioner’s compound. Over two hundred Sepoys were also hanged and many others were court martialed. The British authorities confiscated the property of Thakur Bishwanath Sahi and Pandey Ganpat Rai.
On the victory of British Army in Chatra, Colonel Dalton began to feel immense relief. Though the Company’s Officers had somehow recaptured Hazaribagh, Ranchi and Purulia, in Singhbhum and Palamau the popular rebellious movement was still in progress in many parts of the Jharkhand.
